Reading

 

Literature is the core of our reading program Connections (Macmillan) from fold literature to modern classics, the literature was chosen to interest students of diverse backgrounds.

Literature 

1) Students are encouraged to broaden their appreciation of varied works. 
2) They seek meaning fro well written literature. 
3) And increase their sensitivity to differences in people and cultures.

Language Art 

1) Students are encouraged to respond to literature through oral language. 
2) They express ideas through writing and journaling.

Skills 

1) In Connections students are taught to use a number of strategies. 
2) Literary skill to identify theme, setting, and plot. 
3) Critical reading to identify character traits, motives, and solutions. 
4) Study skills to decode and improve vocabulary.

As enrichment to Connections our students read award winning Newberry Novels through the school year. Introducing these novels is important to our program which continues to be built upon during their junior high years.
