Religion In religion classes, Grade 3 students learn about their parish community and the Creed or beliefs of the Catholic Church. Emphasis is placed on the thorough understanding of the four marks of the church: the church is one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. Another area of study at this level is the introduction of the sacraments of initiation, sacraments of healing and forgiveness, and sacraments of service. Children participate in prayer daily and attend Mass weekly. Also, each grade is responsible for the preparation of one school Mass. The core of the fourth grade curriculum is the understanding of the Ten Commandments and the covenant that we have with God to obey the Commandments. Another major area of study at the fourth grade level is the introduction to the Beatitudes, the rules that tell us how to be holy and live God's way. Students participate in prayer daily and attend Mass weekly. Also fourth grade is responsible for the preparation of one school Mass. In religion classes, Grade 5 students learn that the sacraments are signs of God's grace and we share in God's life when we receive the sacraments. The sacraments of initiation, sacraments of healing and forgiveness, and the sacraments of service are discussed in depth. Another area of focus at the fifth grade level is the understanding of the parts of the Mass with a concentration on the Liturgy of Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Fifth grade students participate in prayer daily and attend Mass weekly. Students are responsible for the preparation of one school Mass. Students serve their faith community in many ways. Children serve as lectors, acolytes, prayer leaders, buddies to younger students, and participate in service projects. This year the intermediate division will sponsor a fundraising drive called Pennies Count to benefit Catholic Charities. |
